Pocket Rumble, created by Cardboard Robot Games, is a 2D fighting game designed to be reminiscent of classic Neo Geo pocket fighting games, with simplified gameplay and controls to make the game more accessible while still being deep and balanced, capable of standing up to years of high level competitive play.

Design decisions Edit

Decision Reason for decision
All characters have the same size hitboxes It makes the game much more accessible, easier to understand, and removes uncertainty of whether a certain combo will hit characters of different sizes. [1]
All characters have the same amount of specials and supers It makes the game much more accessible and easier to understand—especially for people new to fighting games. [1]
All characters have the same amount of health It makes the game much more accessible and easier to understand—especially for people new to fighting games. [1]
The game uses GGPO netcode. [2] GGPO uses netcode uniquely designed for fighting games.

Controls Edit

The controls are discussed here:

Skills tested Edit

Apart from physical dexterity, Pocket Rumble involves skills and knowledge required for other fighting games, such as:

  • yomi (ability to read your opponent)
  • valuation
  • character knowledge
  • knowledge of matchups (what to do versus a specific character)

Yomi and valuation

"Yomi" is Japanese for "reading," which, in the context of competitive games, refers to "knowing (reading) the mind of your opponent." [3]

Valuation refers to knowing the relative value of each move—both in relation to other movies, and in different situations.

Playing Pocket Rumble will teach you to pay attention to small clues that indicate how people think and act, and to feel, trust, and interpret your intuitive hunches—your gut instinct. Yomi and valuation are skills that may be useful in other games (especially competitive games), and even other areas of your life.

Setting and lore Edit

Playable characters Edit

Pocket Rumble is an asymmetric game (like most 2D and 3D fighting games), not a symmetric game (like Chess), which means players can choose between a cast of characters, each with unique moves, strengths, weaknesses, and abilities that reflect that character's particular personality and style.

PC, Steam, and Neo Geo Pocket

At release Pocket Rumble will be playable on PC [6] via Steam and a DRM-free download of the game. Homebrewer, Thor, is also porting the game to Neo Geo Pocket[7], though the game will be trimmed down a bit to accommodate the dated platform. [Citation needed] To quote the Kickstarter page[8]:

The ROM will be free for anyone to download and play using an emulator or a flash cart. It will probably only have arcade mode, and a lot of things about the game will have to be altered to accommodate the system's limitations, but we think it'll be really fun to see our game running on one of our favorite systems, alongside the games that inspired so much about it.
Other platforms

The Kickstarter campaign had Mac, Linux, PS Vita, and Nintendo 3DS as stretch goals, though those goals were not met.[9] However, the developer has said that if they can buy a Mac before launch, it will be available for Mac at release, and that:

[Playstation] Vita [and Nintendo] 3DS are also an option but both require us to get an SDK, and apparently 3DS SDKs cost a ton so that particular port is looking less and less likely (even though our new native resolution is 3DS resolution just in case).

Pre-development prototype Edit

The prototype for Pocket Rumble was created modifying ("modding") Street Fighter 4, another fighting game, so that it had Pocket Rumble's inputs and moves.[11]

A future Steam release is likely, though preordering gives access to a Steam key.

Trivia Edit

  • During early pre-development concept design stages, some of the character ideas included: a soviet killer crab robot, giant enemy crabs, a 1950's toy robot, and a teddy bear with scissors, The character design was paired down once the character sketches were done in Photoshop in order to see what looked good at the game's resolution.[17]
  • Developers Christian Stewart and April Sewell said they
    • learned a lot about fighting games from creating Pocket Rumble.[18]
    • got lots of ideas for the game from watching matches of top tournament players[19]

We'll probably get enough money for me to buy a Mac during early access so it'll probably end up on Mac as well before launch (from what I understand converting GGPO to something other than a DLL shouldn't be too bad once we have the actual source). Vita/3DS are also an option but both require us to get an SDK, and apparently 3DS SDKs cost a ton so that particular port is looking less and less likely (even though our new native resolution is 3DS resolution just in case)."
